tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-26484767805166488382012-02-16T19:19:13.066-08:00Mr. Stryfehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17329759863328282841noreply@blogger.comBlogger21100tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2648476780516648838.post-65330374960314232812011-10-29T09:08:00.000-07:002011-10-29T09:08:31.468-07:00I've been buying a fortune in <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ebook">E-Books</a>, well, since the old original <a href="http://www.mobipocket.com/">Mobipocket </a>store and a few other places.&nbsp; (Baen books.&nbsp; They are so cool they are getting their own post.)&nbsp;<br /><br />I started out reading them on my computer, but that causes neck pain, etc, so then I was using (way back in the day) an OLD school Palm device, then a Treo, and finally the last of the real Palm Pilots.<br />After that I was using an HP convertible touch screen notebook but it was bulky and generated too much heat.<br /><br />Along came the Amazon Kindle.<br /><br />And there was much rejoicing.&nbsp; It was everything at the time that an e-book reader needed to be.&nbsp; The Pros:<br /><ul><li>Small size, very thin, easy to pack, even in a leather "book" case</li><li>Immense battery life</li><li>Wireless (802.11 only on my model) connectivity</li><li>Works with the mobi format.&nbsp; (Mobipocket store, remember?)&nbsp; And not only that, epub freely converts, so the nook stuff got moved too.</li><li>E-ink.&nbsp; You can read it in bright daylight! </li><li>Plays MP3's.</li></ul>Cons:<br /><ul><li> Only reads PDF and Mobi</li><li>E-ink.&nbsp; You can't read it in the dark</li><li>It is ONLY an e-reader, however it will get your gmail (badly) and other simple websites.&nbsp; </li><li>No removable storage, no upgrades</li></ul>While I think it is a wonderful reader, and its narrowness of focus is elegant, I wanted more.&nbsp; (I would like to mention that the lack of internet messaging is NOT a bad thing when you want to curl up and just read.&nbsp; However, reading in bed next to sleeping spouse means light must be on, and...<br /> <br />Then I purchased my first android phone, and Motorola Flipside.&nbsp; Small screen, slide out keyboard, small form factor, lousy battery life.<br /><br />However.&nbsp; Wow.&nbsp; Light years ahead of my Blackberry as far as the "other" things it would do.&nbsp; With connect bot I can even fix servers from my phone.&nbsp; I tried the kindle app for it, works great.&nbsp; Then I discovered Aldiko reader.&nbsp; Even better, more versatile, and reads EPub format.&nbsp; Well, that sucked for about a week, until I found Calibre, the open source e-book converter.&nbsp; Mobi to EPub, then save to the phone's SD card.<br /><br />Downfall.&nbsp; Poor battery and bad eyesight.<br /><br />So I gave my flipside to my ex-wife, and bought an HTC Inspire 4G, monster screen, better battery life.&nbsp; Lots more capable, almost as if it was a tiny tablet.<br /><br />Then after I had been at the new job for a while, some of the guys were getting Acer Iconia Tablets.&nbsp; Very much everything I thought I wanted and more in a portable device.<br /><br />Of course, what Stryfe wants, Stryfe gets.&nbsp; So I got one.<br /><br />Love it.&nbsp; It has replaced my Thinkpad almost completely.<br /><br />More later.<div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/2648476780516648838-6533037496031423281?l=mrstryfe.blogspot.com' alt='' /></div>Mr. Stryfehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17329759863328282841noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2648476780516648838.post-51009466509671245142011-10-29T00:06:00.000-07:002011-10-29T00:06:12.452-07:00Oi!<div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/2648476780516648838-5100946650967124514?l=mrstryfe.blogspot.com' alt='' /></div>Mr. Stryfehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17329759863328282841noreply@blogger.com0
